ecological garden design

coming home to nature

A garden is meant to be lived in. A place for meaningful conversations, and a space to unwind after a long day. A place of discovery, where children embark on adventures and all the senses come alive. A place where simple joys unfold, in every season.

ecological

We are not the only inhabitants of our garden. Every garden is part of an ecosystem, where plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms work together to create a healthy soil, clean air, and a pleasant microclimate. I design for people, animals, and nature.

nature x architecture

My design style is inspired by the Scandinavian appreciation for simplicity, functionality, and the natural environment. The right balance between nature and architecture is reflected in thoughtful lines, natural forms, and flower-rich gardens.

edible

In my planting plans, I like to include edible plants. Nothing beats food from your own garden, and you don’t need a vegetable patch to enjoy it. With fruit trees and bushes, herbs, and perennial vegetables, every garden can provide a feast. It encourages food awareness and teaches children what healthy snacking is.

seasonal blooming

My designs follow the rhythm of the seasons, with multiple flowering moments throughout the year. From spring bulbs to summer blooms, and from autumn flowers to winter silhouettes. This way, you can enjoy the garden in every season, while also providing extra value for insects and other animals.

design project

Every garden is unique, and for each design project I provide a tailored quote.

intake meeting

In a thorough intake meeting, online or at your home, we discuss your current garden, your wishes, and ideas. We set agreements and review the planning, so you know what to expect from me.

ecological quickscan

Next, I investigate how your garden can provide added value for insects and other animals in the immediate area and surrounding landscape. This includes food, shelter, and nesting opportunities.

garden design

Using a 2D scaled drawing and a 3D rendering (optional), I create a design for your garden. This includes fixed elements such as seating areas, pergolas, planting beds, trees, and shrubs.

technical drawings

Once the garden design is finalised, I create the technical drawings. These are scaled drawings with detailed measurements of the garden.

materials plan

The materials plan outlines all the chosen materials for the garden. If you wish to hire a landscaper to carry out the installation, you can request a quote at this stage of the design process.

planting plan

The planting plan brings the garden to life. It includes scaled drawings of all planting beds, showing the specific species and placement of every tree, shrub, plant, and bulb.

 FAQs

  • Depending on the size of the garden, the total duration of a design project, including feedback rounds, is on average 12 weeks. During the intake meeting, we discuss when you would like to have your garden realised. Based on that, we create a planning and set agreements together.

  • Every garden is unique, and for each design project I provide a tailored quote. Based on your garden’s dimensions, I estimate the number of hours I expect to spend. A fixed price ensures clarity for both parties. This includes two feedback rounds: one for the 2D design and one for the planting plan.

  • The cost of realising a garden depends on many factors. It varies by country (market) and is influenced by the size of the garden and the materials chosen. For example, in the Netherlands, you can expect a minimum of €10,000 for a completely new garden. During the intake meeting, I ask about your budget so I can take this into account in the garden design. Some clients choose to realise the garden themselves to save costs. In that case, I will provide tips for realising your garden at the end of the design project.

  • 1 M2. ;) Honestly? Any garden (or rooftop terrace, balcony, patio) can benefit from a thoughtful design. In fact, in a small garden, a good design can have a surprisingly big impact on the sense of space.

  • Yes. A planting plan alone is possible, for which I am happy to provide a tailored quote. A garden design without a planting plan is not possible.

  • A garden can be realised throughout the year (except when it is freezing). However, the best times for planting are in spring or autumn. The soil is then warm, but not too warm or dry. Autumn offers the most favorable conditions, as plants can focus on developing strong roots rather than leaf or flower growth.
