Garden design
A garden design begins with the site. With what is already there, the soil, and the surroundings, but also with how you experience and use the garden. Studio Jong Baw designs ecological gardens where clean lines and natural plantings come together. From small urban gardens to woodland gardens, with a focus on biodiversity, sustainability, and the seasons.
Design process
Introductory meeting
During an introductory meeting, we will get to know each other better and discuss your garden, wishes, and budget. Based on this, I will prepare a customized quote.
Inventory
Once the quote has been approved, I’ll measure the garden and take stock of the existing plants and materials. I’ll also assess the soil, the garden’s location, and its surroundings.
Design
I develop the vision for the garden into a design drawing (scale floor plan) and a mood board with inspirational images. After the presentation, I incorporate any feedback into the final design.
Technical drawings
Next, I’ll work out the dimensions, any cross-sections, and the materials list. A 3D rendering and lighting plan are optional. With this package, we can request a quote from a landscape contractor.
Planting plan
In the planting plan, I determine which plants will go where. I tailor this to the soil and the garden’s location. I also take into account flowering times, composition, and ecological value.
Construction
I work with sustainable landscapers and am happy to oversee the garden’s realisation. You can also find your own landscaper or build the garden (partly) yourself. After a year, I’d be happy to stop by to see how the garden is coming along.
Services
Garden design
A garden design consists of a design sketch, technical drawings, and a planting plan. A 3D rendering and a lighting plan are optional. The price depends on the garden’s area in square meters and starts at €1,750, including VAT.
Planting plan
A separate planting plan for existing plant borders is also available. The price depends on the number of square meters of the borders and starts at €500, including VAT.
Advice
During a personal consultation, we can discuss the garden layout, plantings, or materials. The rate is €75 per hour, including VAT. If a garden design follows, these costs will be credited toward the design fee.
Service area
Studio Jong Baw designs gardens in the Netherlands, Sweden, and beyond, but is currently based in Västra Götaland, Sweden. Sometimes I work on-site and sometimes remotely, depending on the project and in collaboration with local landscapers.
Who is the designer?
'After more than 10 years in communications, I retrained as an ecological garden designer in 2023. I wrote a lot about mental health and well-being, but I wanted to create something myself that would contribute to greater happiness and a sustainable world.
I design every garden based on the story of the residents and the location. How do you relax in the garden after a busy day? What do insects, birds, and other animals in the area need? Where do children go on their adventures?
This creates a garden that surrounds you with nature while also feeling like an extension of your home. A place that bursts with life in every season of the year.'

The duration of a design process depends on the size of the garden and any feedback that needs to be incorporated. A complete garden design process, including a planting plan, typically takes at least 8 weeks. During the initial consultation, we’ll discuss when the garden should be landscaped and the corresponding schedule.

Of course, that’s possible. After the garden presentation, you’ll have the opportunity to provide feedback on the design. Incorporating feedback is part of this phase of the design process and therefore does not incur any additional costs.

A garden can be planted year-round, except when there is a frost. The best times to plant are in the spring or fall. The soil is then neither too warm nor too dry. In the fall, plants can focus on strong root growth rather than leaf growth or flowering.

The cost of landscaping a garden depends on many factors, such as the garden’s location and the condition of the soil. Materials are a major expense, so as a general rule: the greener the garden, the lower the cost. During the initial consultation, we’ll discuss your budget and which choices will affect the cost. Every garden benefits from a little care, but an ecological garden requires little maintenance. It’s a good idea to make sure the plants get enough water in the beginning when the weather is dry or warm, and to remove any weeds growing among the new plants. This gives the plants the best chance to become well-established. But after that, the garden is supposed to largely take care of itself.
